During the first and second stages, events are organised with the aim of presenting the participants of the competition and revealing the ideas of their works. Additionally, online workshops and discussions will be organised as part of the nominations of the competition.

Contest Nominations 2023/24

This is how I see, think, feel

Works on the vision of the life of the surrounding world, its beauty and problems in the genres of audiovisual art (social advertising, microfilm (one-minute stories), fine art with the possible application of artificial intelligence, animation, video collages with original sound, etc.).

Identity of time

Works in the genres of folklore and urban culture that reveal common features and the uniqueness of cultures, the interpenetration of cultures of different nations, their interweaving, the reflection of the old times in the present and in the images of the future world.

Where are you from?

Works in various techniques and genres that reveal the originality of the authors’ hometowns, the connection of their life stories with the history and traditions of cities or towns.

YES!

Research and vision for overcoming contemporary challenges, current investigations, scientific and innovative works aimed at improving the quality of life.

The formula of happiness

Literary works in Ukrainian and English, journalistic and documentary works based on the stories of solidarity, friendship, mutual aid, musical compositions, and happy handmade.

Awards and Recognition

Receive participant certificates and diplomas. Attend the ceremony on June 1, 2024, in Kyiv. Winners earn the International Junior Contest #U_Hero Award sign and corresponding Winner Diploma.

All the participants of International Junior Contest #U_Hero Award, who have successfully completed the authentication process, will receive participant certificates.


The participants who have become candidates in the nominations will receive diplomas of International Junior Contest #U_Hero Award and commemorative presents. They are also invited to the contest ceremony, which is taking place on June 1, 2024 in Kyiv.


The winners in the nominations are awarded with a sign International Junior Contest #U_Hero Award and the corresponding Diploma of the Winner in the nomination.

Submit your work, an essay about yourself, and a photo

Participate individually or in groups of up to 5

The registration for participation in International Junior Contest #U_Hero Award 2023/24 opens from November 1, 2023. The deadline for sending materials for the work registration is 1.05.2024 (until 18:00 CET).

A participant is considered the person who has completed registration (authentication) under the following conditions:


Filling in an online application form on the contest website within the deadlines mentioned above.

Submitting the competitive work in electronic format (the link to download the work should be placed in the application form).


Submitting an essay about yourself, your own focus of attention, which is represented in the competitive work (as a separate file with the link provided in the application form).


A photo of the applicant (as a separate file, with the link provided in the application form).


Applications are submitted individually or collectively. Collective work can be presented by a group of up to 5 people. In the case of submitting such an application, the application form and the competitive work are submitted by the entire group, and the essay and photo are submitted by each member of the group.


In all applications and competitive works the following things are encouraged:


Your personal story is in the spotlight. Tell us about your vision of the world, understanding of your identity, and things that are important for you.


In the idea, there are thousands of languages for understanding. Your creativity is a universal language of communication with the world. Your works should inspire.


We do not express «concern», we aspire to act together and create a new world. The competitive work should be the result of projects or a suggestion for collaborative actions, a subject for sharing thoughts and finding solutions.

Contest Works Requirements

Each category has unique requirements

The nomination «This is how I see, think, feel», audiovisual works:

• Social advertising: videos up to 30 seconds in length which in a figurative form highlight a problem and promote responsible behaviour and socially significant actions;

• Microfilm: a one-minute video story that conveys a specific moral, defines the qualities of the hero, addresses a problem, captures the beauty and uniqueness of life, etc;

• Fine art with the possible application of artificial intelligence: works in various techniques and genres that, in a symbolic form, illustrate thoughts, convey a story, shape attitudes, and inspire action, etc;

• Animation: a metaphorical story up to 90 seconds in length which reveals a specific moral, thoughts, life issues in contemporary conditions, and their impact on the future;

• Video collages with original sound: a set of slides (up to 15 pieces) in an original design, unified by a common theme, illustrating thoughts, emphasising values, and outlining future prospects.


Markers by which the works are evaluated:

• Originality of the idea and choice of the theme of the work;

• Performance technique and proficiency in using artistic tools;

• Expressiveness and emotional depth of the work;

• Suggestion for action and positivity.


Works can be submitted in the following formats: mov, mp4.

«Identity of time». Works in the form of videos, clips, minifilms (short films), illustrated presentations, based on:

• Materials of expeditions, investigations, trips to different countries;

• Creating works in authentic settings (in towns and villages typical of them, in the city streets);

• Traditional crafts, competitions, games;

• Traditional and new celebrations and rituals (festivals);

• Ornaments as elements of clothing design, in everyday life, exteriors, street art, etc.;


Markers by which the works are evaluated:

• Originality of the idea and choice of the theme of the work;

• Vivid examples for comparison and illustrations;

• Performance technique and proficiency in using artistic tools;

• Expressiveness and emotional depth of the work;

• Integrity, accuracy, and authenticity of the material.


Duration of the works:

• Video up to 5 minutes;

• Presentations up to 15 slides, a video may be used in the presentation.

Technical requirements:

• Video formats: mov, mp4,

• Presentation formats: pdf, kye, pptx.

«Where are you from?». Works in various techniques and genres, photos, visual creativity, videos, minifilms, illustrated texts (essays, short stories, longread, etc.) based on:

• presentation of the cities and towns where the authors live;

• reflections on why the city is important to the author, which values are especially significant;

• stories of city heroes, real or fictional (who the city needs);

• social and cultural initiatives, festivals, and traditions which unite the community;

• symbols, iconic and significant places for the author, which reflect the essence of the city, its content, and illustrate important stories of the author’s life;

• dreams about one’s own city, the ideal city in general, and ideas for the author’s future in the context of city development.


Markers by which the works are evaluated:

• Originality of the idea and disclosure of the theme;

• Imagery and symbolism;

• Incorporation of the author’s personal stories within the context of the city’s history;

• Performance technique and proficiency in using artistic tools;

• Expressiveness and emotional depth of the work;

• Suggestions for positive actions, transformations, improvements;

• Integrity, accuracy, and authenticity of the material.


Duration (volume) of the works:

• Video up to 5 minutes;

• Presentations up to 15 slides, a video may be used in the presentation;

• Verbal illustrated works up to 5000 characters, up to 10 illustrations.

Technical requirements:

• Video formats: mov, mp4;

• Presentation formats: pdf, kye, pptx;

• texts with illustrations in formats pdf, docx.

«YES!». Works in various techniques, namely minifilms, videos, illustrated texts (essays, summaries, longread, etc.) based on:

• vision of ways to overcome global and local challenges;

• vision of opportunities for human potential development;

• ideas for shaping and maintaining mental health;


Markers by which the works are evaluated:

• Topicality of the work focus;

• Research and analytical base;

• Author’s ideas and applied nature of the work;

• Expressiveness and emotional depth of the work;

• Performance technique and proficiency in using artistic tools;

• Integrity and persuasiveness.


Duration (volume) of the works:

• Video up to 5 minutes;

• Presentations up to 15 slides, a video may be used in the presentation;

• Verbal illustrated works up to 5000 characters, up to 10 illustrations.


Technical requirements:

• Video formats: mov, mp4;

• Presentation formats: pdf, kye, pptx;

• texts with illustrations in formats pdf, docx.

«The formula of happiness». Literary works, journalistic and documentary works based on the stories of solidarity, friendship, mutual aid, musical compositions, and happy handmade.

Literary works:

• the main languages: English, Ukrainian. The original language with its translation into the main languages is permitted.

• small literary forms – short stories, essays, diaries, etc.

• work length is up to 10000 characters.


Journalistic works:

• the main languages: English, Ukrainian. The original language with its translation into the main languages is permitted.

• work length is up to 7000 characters.

• illustrations – up to 5


Documentary works:

• duration: up to 10 minutes

• language: original with English subtitles

• formats: mov, mp4


Musical compositions:

• instrumental compositions

• vocal parts can be included in the composition

• duration: up to 3 minutes 30 seconds

• formats: mp3, wav

• the author can add music to the video

• video formats: mp4, mov


Happy handmade

• a soft toy (up to 30 cm)

• items of soft interior decor (pillows, napkins, wicker fruit baskets, etc.)

• mugs

• slippers, socks

• other items that evoke the feeling of comfort and harmony…


Markers by which the works are evaluated:

• Originality of the concept, emotional depth, and vividness of its expression;

• The author’s vision of happiness and its manifestations;

• Performance technique, proficiency in using artistic tools, including the use of various techniques and genres;

• Composition, harmonious balance;

• The author’s style and a sense of the work’s form.


The photos of the works should be submitted. The organisers may suggest that some works should be sent in their original form for an exhibition.


All competitive works should be submitted electronically to the organisers’ email address.

All works submitted to the competition will not be reviewed or returned.


Publications of the works sent to the competition is done with the consent of the authors. The organisers reserve the right to mention the works and quote their statements in the context of the competition during the project season.
